Thinking of a master plan

Building culture

Why: We live in a world full of divide. Its black vs white, young vs old, introvert vs extrovert, us vs them, me vs you. There’s no need for all this divide when together we have so much to offer. Together we can go further than any other generation in history. Im tired of one narrative, one story, this one size fits all society hasn’t worked, this one size fits all education does not fit everyone.

August/September – each class/advisory starts with two questions.
Where did I come from, where have I been? (on paper)
Using story maps individuals will tell their stories of self. Then whole classes can put together a joint story map with the following questions in mind:
Who are we? Where have we been?
Putting their story maps they can start to visualize their global impact.

Objective – students will be able to develop a strong sense of who they are by investigating where they and their families have been and come from.

Have students take more ownership of the school

Putting their maps together will allow them to see their global footprint and global impact.

First town hall (looking for the next big DJ)!!!! (20 mins, let the kids do whatever they want, just observe, just observe)

Use https://www.youtubemixer.net/ to create a playlist and make it bump

Second town hall (DJ contest)

Roll out t-shirt design contest, students design t-shirt around year long theme, school wide vote for tshirt design

Create a wordle of values either school wide or by grade level. Print and put them up. Use http://www.wordle.net/create

Set up a team of students interested in graphic design to make the posters and flyers for school events. Could use publisher, could use canva.

Questions for teachers: how are you going to make your classroom more student centered/scholar driven?

What are you going to give up control of this year?

  1. Looking forward to seeing how you present this. I know it will be creative, vibrant and interesting - as your work always is!

  2. I love your plan and hope to steal your first day advisory questions. Who we are and where we come from - important questions - big questions. Not sure how twelve year olds will do with them, but I would like them to try. Thanks

  3. Love your idea of story maps. At my school, we start every year with the staff presenting story maps to each other during summer PD. In fact, I just updated mine this weekend. Last year, third and fourth graders shared these maps with each other and it did help them create classroom identity and a platform to discuss culturally relevant topics throughout the year.
